A Message from the Chairman of the Board
Friends of Pacific Theological Seminary,
This Fall marks more than a new semester—it marks a renewed commitment to our mission, energized by a fresh transition of leadership.
Dr. Sharon Tan has prayerfully and faithfully guided Pacific Theological Seminary through one of the most challenging times in the history of theological education—a season in which even some of the most established seminaries have closed, downsized, merged, or relocated. With wisdom and courage, she has led us with distinction, prioritizing vital areas such as accreditation, and most importantly, helping us clarify who we are and where God is calling us to go.
Through this process of discernment, Dr. Tan has concluded that the next chapter of our journey requires a different kind of leadership. With humility and grace, she has chosen to step aside, opening the way for a new president to lead Pacific forward.
That new president is someone already deeply known and respected within our community: Dr. Jim Smith. The Board has unanimously affirmed this transition in leadership from Dr. Tan to Dr. Smith, and we are grateful that Dr. Smith has accepted this call to serve.
As a Board, we are profoundly thankful for both Dr. Sharon Tan and Dr. Jim Smith. In each of them, we see the very heart of Pacific Theological Seminary—leaders willing to make significant personal sacrifices for the good of this institution. Dr. Tan has handed over leadership at a pivotal time, and Dr. Smith now steps in with a heart and skill set uniquely suited for this season of challenge and opportunity. We give thanks for their shared commitment and for the gift of a seamless transition.
We invite you to join us in expressing deep gratitude to Dr. Sharon Tan for her extraordinary contributions, and in warmly welcoming Dr. Jim Smith as our new president. Let us stand alongside him—with prayer, faith, and dedication—to strengthen Pacific Seminary as a place that nourishes students and serves churches in San Diego and beyond.
"Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain."
—Psalm 127:1 (NIV)
God has brought us this far. Now, we—the builders—must rise to the task. We need every one of you. Together, let us bring our gifts, time, resources, connections, and talents to build a seminary that will thrive for generations to come.
Blessings,
Andre Ong
